Case Study: Production Test Gearbox Vibration Analysis System

Introduction

The customer is a major industry in Germany.

The application was for a vibration monitoring system to be used as part of the final validation stage in their production test labs.

The customer had developed some very clever vibration monitoring algorithms in Matlab but needed them to be ported to an embedded CPU for deployment onto the factory floor.

An initial discussion was held with the customer to run through the benefits and disadvantages of the different hardware solutions - embedded DSP, microcontroller, industrial PC.

After the initial review the customer decided that they wanted to base their future instrumentation on LabView™ so decided that a PC based solution would be the platform of choice.

Implementation

Sigma Numerix developed a library of algorithms, in C, with a Dynamic Link Library (DLL) API that could be accessed from LabView.

Testing is a critical part of ensuring that any project meets the customer's requirements. For this project, the customer was able to provide reference data files that could be used as part of a functional test suite to ensure that the algorithms met expectations.

The final deployed solution executes on desktop PCs and was both cost effective and flexible. As a further benefit, the software solution ensures that the code will never again become obsolete.

Having the full source code for the SigLib™ DSP library and the additional software developed as part of the contract means that the end user will always be able to make maximum use of re-usability should they wish to add further enhancements and functionality in the future.
